Picnic Preparation: Tips & Tricks

OZtrail

We're well and truly into the sweetest season of the year, spring! The sun is shining bright, the birds are chirping loudly and the flowers are in full bloom. It's the perfect backdrop for any outdoor event. Alfresco eating becomes almost an obsession when the weather warms up and what better way to indulge than with a picnic. They're the perfect way to unwind in the company of great friends and/or family.

To pull off a successful, stress-free picnic, you'll need to plan and prepare for the event ahead of time. We've come up with a list of tips and tricks to make your outdoor dining experience a breeze.

Location

When choosing where to set up for the afternoon remember to be mindful of unexpected weather changes and the fact you'll have to carry your gear from the car or house to your spot. Opting for lighter chairs, tables and gazebos will help with the trek if the distance does turn out to be a little further than you planned. DuraLite Chairs, Ironside Tables and the OneTouch Day Shade are great options as they're light and durable.

Set the mood

Other than the delicious food, providing a comfortable environment for you and your guests to relax in is essential to creating the perfect picnic. You are sitting on the ground for hours after all! If you're setting up in the park, you may want to start by laying down a large waterproof picnic rug incase the grass is dewy. The next step is to add your comfort layers - throw blankets and pillows are easy to pack and very plush to sit on. Nap under the trees anyone?

Less is more

It's easy to get carried away when it comes to planning the menu for your alfresco event. Our tip? Less is more! Avoid messy or difficult foods and stick to simple bites like sandwiches and pastries. They're quick to make and are generally a crowd favourite. Cheese boards are also great as they allow you to lay out a variety of cheeses, fruits and other edible goods. Plus, they really spruce your picnic up!

A few of our favourite recipes include:

Caprese Sandwiches with Parsley Pesto.
Although we're a fan of the classic ham, cheese and tomato sandwich, this flavoursome recipe is bound to leave a lasting impression. We're drooling just thinking about it.

Antipasto Skewers
Simple, no-fuss and oh so tasty. You really can't go wrong with skewers at a picnic! Get creative and design your own or check out our go-to recipe.

Chocolate-Filled Strawberries
Three words; chocolate-filled-strawberries. Need we say more?

Tear and Share Sausage Rolls
Set this recipe up on a board in the middle of your set up and watch it vanish in minutes. It's convenient, delicious and will leave your guests wanting more. No cutlery required, just napkins!

Don't forget the essentials

Once you've pre-prepared your tasty treats, packed your coolers and organised your seating it's time to think about the little things that often get missed. Things like drinking water, rubbish bags, napkins, knives and a bottle opener, sunscreen, insect repellant and a music speaker. The next step is to kick back, relax and enjoy the amazing spread you've created!
